"We can take as our examples St. Francisco and St. Jacinta, whom the Virgin Mary introduced into the vast ocean of God's light and taught to adore him", the pontiff said in his homily. All three commissions concluded that they could not affirm that a supernatural event was occurring in the town.
According to Pope Francis's predecessor, Benedict XVI, the visions described in the three secrets are "meant to mobilise the forces of change in the right direction". But his visit to Fatima is purely religious. Authorities said they expected 1 million people. "Life can survive only because of the generosity of other lives".
The church says the Fatima case is altogether different.

Before the ceremony, a statue of the Virgin Mary was paraded around the square in bright sunshine as people threw petals at it. Francis waved to the thousands lining the streets who cheered and shouted "Viva o Papa!"
Francis departed from Rome's Leonardo da Vinci airport on Friday afternoon to celebrate the centenary of the apparitions and canonize the children.
In 2000, Saint John Paul II beatified the Marto siblings during a Mass at Fatima and used the occasion of the new millennium to reveal the third secret that the children reported they had received from the Virgin Mary.
Pope Francis added two Portuguese shepherd children to the roster of Catholic saints on Saturday, honouring young siblings whose reported visions of the Virgin Mary 100 years ago turned the Portuguese farming town of Fatima into one of the world's most important Catholic shrines.
"In the Catholic faith, she is the queen of heaven and earth", said Bill Stack of Taylor, who plans to participate.
Pilgrims from as far afield as China, Venezuela and East Timor listened to the pontiff's homily.

The first two secrets were revealed soon and concerned a vision of hell, seen by believers as a prediction of the outbreak of World War II, a warning that Russian Federation would "spread her errors" in the world, and a need for general conversion to God and prayer, Reuters reported.
