Did you know Avril Lavigne was replaced by a lookalike named Melissa in 2003?
Fans of Avril Lavigne have some unbelievable news to celebrate now that the Canadian rocker has revealed she's headed back into the studio to record an upcoming album. During a time when everyone was supposed to celebrate Mother's Day, a conspiracy theory on Twitter has brought out a group of truthers. Well, there's this side-by-side comparison that looks like the same person, only a bit older. which is exactly what's happened to Avril Lavigne in the past 15 years.
Social researcher Lauren Rosewarne from the University of Melbourne said conspiracy theories that blow up over the internet were based on the same formula as a "chain letter".
The wild fan theory says that label bosses chose to cover up her death and continue to release her songs, using Melissa instead. There was even a photo of Avril from a photoshoot with the name Melissa written on her hand.
Avril Lavigne's death theory is once again making the rounds online, thanks to another Twitter user.
They claim the "Sk8er Boi" singer became severely depressed after her grandfather's death.
A blogger said: "Launched in 2004, it is completely different to the first CD!"
The rumors claim "The Punk Princess", as Lavigne was popularly known as at the time, eventually hanged herself because of depression and her body was apparently discovered at her home by her record company. Avril Lavigne is active on Twitter and the internet crowd helped themselves with this opportunity.
Since then, though, more and more people have found evidence for the theory, attaining a sort of crowd-sourced legitimacy. She most recently posted a selfie with her mother on Mother's Day.
Ms Lavigne is active on social media platforms and her latest tweet on 14 May is a snap of herself and her mother on the occasion of Mother's Day in the USA and Canada.
And it's not just physical features that users believe have changed - others are were suspicious when Avril promoted a slimming bar as a "yummy and healthy snack". But of course Avril is very much alive.
Avril herself has yet to comment on the conspiracy theory.
