Dave hailed from Madhya Pradesh and took over as Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change (Independent Charge) from Prakash Javdekar in July 2016.
Union Environment Minister Anil Madhav Dave passed away on Thursday morning in New Delhi of a cardiac arrest.
President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in mourning the loss of Dave whom he had met only on Wednesday evening.
Union Environment Minister Anil Dave, a long time RSS member, died due to heart failure on Thursday. "He was tremendously passionate towards conserving the environment", Modi added.
Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad recalled Dave as "a very soft spoken and honest person". He expressed an opposition to big dams and an admiration for Tripura's CPI (M) chief minister Manik Sarkar for his "simplicity". In a tweet, the minister said Dave was also a person who gave a new dimension to Indian cultural not just at the national level, but globally as well.
Ram Bilas Paswan, the current Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution expressed his condolences on Dave's demise.
He was also known for his work in the field of river conservation. His organisational skills and connect with grassroots karyakartas (workers) was unparalleled.
Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju said that the late BJP leader was the "perfect definition of a gentleman and good human being".
A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member, Dave represented Madhya Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha since 2009. Soon after this event, he was elevated as a minister in the Union Cabinet.
Sources said the body would be taken to Indore, where the minister's brother lives.
Dave was born to Pushpa and Madhav Dave at Barnagar, district Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh on July 6, 1956. Deepest condolences to his family and friends.
