Defense Ministers of Kazakhstan Saken Zhassuzakov, China Chang Wanquan, Russia Sergey Shoygu, Tajikistan Mirzo Sherali, Uzbekistan Qobul Berdiyev, Chief of the General Staff of Kyrgyzstan Rayimberdi Duishenbiyev and SCO Secretary-General Rashid Alimov attended the meeting.
Stating that once India becomes a full member of the SCO, the bloc "will represent over 40 per cent of humanity and almost 20 per cent of global GDP", Modi said in a pre-departure statement: "We launched the process of full membership in Tashkent meeting of the SCO previous year".
Meanwhile, Modi is expected to raise the issue of India's membership to the NSG during a meeting with Chinese President Xi, scheduled to take place on the sidelines of the SCO summit. The SCO is a Russian- and Chinese-led organisation comprised of six (soon to be eight) members and focusses on political, economic and military cooperation.
SCO membership and the B&R initiative help Pakistan's economic development and security, and if Pakistan becomes a wealthy and prosperous country, it would be hard for extremism and terrorism to grow, and that would, in turn, improve conditions along the India-Pakistan border, Li said. "We launched the process of full membership in Tashkent meeting of the SCO previous year", the Prime Minister said in a statement.
The agenda of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Astana Summit includes review of implementation of the Development strategy of SCO till 2025, strengthening regional security, fighting terrorism and extremism, combating drug trafficking and developing cooperation within the expanded organisation.
"There are broadly two legs of collaboration which are being pursued in the SCO platform", Srinivas said.
The Summit will start today (on June 8) here in Astana and will continue till the evening of June 9, 2017.
The One Belt One Road (OBOR) project under the Belt and Road Forum seeks to connect China with Europe, Asia and Africa. We hope that as we join the RATS, we will be able to benefit from this collaboration against our fight against terrorism. Mr. Srinivas said that as a member country, India could consider participating in it.
"We participate with many countries, including Pakistan, in the United Nations peacekeeping operations, and terrorism is a fight which is incumbent on all countries", Mr. Baglay said.
India and Pakistan's entry in SCO marks a legendary achievement for the organisation as now it will represent the voice of 3 billion people.
