"After I lost my hearing I gave up, but I wanted to do more with my life that just give up", she said.
Season 12 of "America's Got Talent" is only two weeks old but there is already a clear frontrunner: Darci Lynne Farmer, a 12-year-old ventriloquist who wowed all four judges.
Singing since she was 4 years old, Harvey lost her hearing after an illness when she was 18.
"I'm feeling the tempo, the beat, through the floor", Harvey answered. Cloud, Florida, resident says she taught herself to sing again using muscle memory and visual tuners.
Mandy arrived with her translator for the auditions. "I didn't know who I was, I didn't know how to communicate with people, I didn't want to look at people, I didn't want to leave my room". "That was one of the most unbelievable things I've ever seen and heard". Harvey told the judges her story, and Howie Mandel noticed she had removed her shoes. She took a break from music, but came back to it and made a decision to audition in front of thousands and become an internet sensation to millions with her original piece of music, "Try".
Mandy performed an original song on Tuesday night which reduced the entire audience to tears. Harvey, who appeared on stage with fellow musicians and an interpreter, revealed prior to her performance that she's deaf.
The show is now in their twelfth season and the judges for this season are Howie Mandel, Mel B, Heidi Klum and Simon Cowell. "Mandy, I don't think you're gonna need a translator for this..."
It should be noted that Cowell pushed the golden buzzer after the performance, which means that Harvey will be able to advance to the live shows. "Honestly, I never think I'm gonna be surprised or amazed by people, and then you turn up, and... just the fact that you are you, but it was your voice, your tone, the song was lovely", Cowell added after returning to his chair.
