Tuesday (June 6) was just the second day of proceedings at a courthouse in Norristown, Pennsylvania, and courtroom watchers - including the judge and Cosby's defense team - were shocked that the prosecution made a decision to call Constand so early in the trial. It wasn't until Constand began having nightmares that she confided in her mother.
Andrea Constand emerged from 12 years of silence Tuesday to testify at Cosby's sexual assault trial.
A day earlier, Constand was asked about the calls by the prosecution and she said that after the alleged assault, Cosby continued to phone her about things related to her job at Temple University, where she worked and where he was an alum.
Agrusa also questioned why Constand allowed herself to be alone with Cosby after the comedian had made advances on two occasions - touching her thigh one time and trying to open her trousers another time. "I felt really humiliated and I was really confused", she said.
During one exchange, Agrusa suggested that Constand once enjoyed a romantic dinner at Cosby's home before the alleged assault. He said to me, 'don't worry mom there was no penile penetration, just digital penetration.' He was talking about it nearly like he was repeating it to me to believe that it was consensual or that it was OK by her.
Cosby (his 2015 mug shot, right, courtesy of the Montgomery County district attorney's office) has largely remained stoic and non-responsive in court, but outside the building he has behaved quite differently.
"My dress was pulled up from the bottom", she said, "and it was pulled down from the top". She said the calls mostly involved the basketball team. Constand said the calls to her university-issued cellphone pertained to Temple women's basketball, and stopped once she left the school.
Constand was direct and polite under cross-examination, even when Agrusa's questioning grew pointed and accusatory.
When Gianna Constand again pressed Cosby for more information about the pills he allegedly gave to Andrea and asked if he was going to follow through with his promise to send the name of the drug to her, Cosby allegedly responded, "We can talk about what you asked for later".
Lili Bernard, a former Cosby Show actress who has also accused Cosby of sexual assault, showed up in court in support of Constand. The defense has tried to characterize both women as professionally eager and malleable, looking for a career change that they knew Cosby could facilitate. A staggering 53 of those calls came from Constand, not Cosby, McMonagle said.
At one point, Constand admitted to giving Cosby an illustration of Fat Albert, a well-known cartoon character he created, with her face on it.
Constand says the mood was friendly and the room light enough to eat.
"I don't know what that means", Ms Constand said.
Constand offered an explanation for why she told police in her native Canada that the incident happened in March 2004 and later told police in Pennsylvania that it was January or February 2004.
"I was trying to get my hands to move, my legs to move, but I was frozen", Constand said.
Johnson, a former assistant at the William Morris talent agency, testified Monday that in 1996 Cosby pressured her to take a pill that left her largely incapacitated. Her inconsistencies have come back to haunt her as she tries to convince a jury that she is a sex-crime victim rather than a woman who willingly had romantic relations with Cosby, whom she had thought of as a mentor.
But Constand said Wednesday she was merely returning his messages.
