The bottom line after Comey's testimony: Unless the special prosecutor or one of the congressional committees finds a hot, smoking gun, the Republicans will never start an impeachment proceeding against Trump, no matter how fervently liberals across America long for it. Comey did not provide that gun.
US President Donald Trump smiles during the Infrastructure Summit with Governors and Mayors at the White House in Washington, US, June 8, 2017. Comey merely testified that the FBI investigation into possible collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign did not extend to Trump himself during the time Comey was leading the FBI. Comey's testimony is damaging, but not enough to crack the 30% of voters who still stand by Trump.
The former Federal Bureau of Investigation director said Trump's private comments urging him to drop the probe into former national security adviser Michael Flynn led him to tell his Justice Department colleagues they needed to be careful.
So, after getting his phone back from his lawyers-or whoever had had to hold onto it to prevent Trump from going off the rails mid-hearing-Trump jumped on Twitter to declare himself vindicated, and Comey "a leaker".
Trump, said one person familiar with his thinking, felt good about the testimony, which proved him right in several cases and included the revelation that Comey had leaked information to reporters.
The ex-director's statement deepened questions about the basis for his May 9 dismissal and about whether Trump's actions constituted obstruction of justice.
Trump's personal lawyer, Marc Kasowitz, publicly denied parts of Comey's testimony including the ex-FBI director's claim that Trump told him, "I need loyalty, I expect loyalty". If the president is ever forced to speak under oath and it is judged that Comey's version is correct, Trump is guilty of perjury - a felony that is actionable by impeachment.
"I don't think it's for me to say whether the conversation I had with the President was an effort to obstruct", Comey testified. That is a big deal. He also said that any other explanations that have come from the White House were "lies, plain and simple", as Jessica reports.
No Republican senator was prepared to question Comey's credibility or integrity.
Finally, just to guard against my own bias, I decided I would provide you with Sean Hannity's take on the day's events. "We had an investigation open at the time so that gave me a queasy feeling". The question about Russian interference in the last United States presidential elections is now nearly a moot point. Comey went along with former Attorney General Loretta Lynch's request to hide the criminal investigation into Hillary Clinton, and later made the extraordinary recommendation not to prosecute her, because he did not want the public to blame him or the FBI for destroying her election prospects. But he has also suggested he doesn't believe it, saying Russian Federation is a "ruse" and calling the investigation into the matter a "witch hunt".
