Houston's unemployment rate is a bit higher than the state's at 5.1 percent.
The state Employment Development Department said Friday that the May figure ties the record low that occurred in November-December 2000. The number of unemployed Iowans increased to 52,900 in May. Unemployment fell slightly to 4.4 percent, coming close to the national rate of 4.1 percent.
The U.S. earlier this month reported 4.3% unemployment, down from 4.4% month-over-month.
Trade, transportation and utilities gained 500 jobs from April 2017 to May 2017. A surge in hiring energy field workers is credited - 6,000 new jobs were added.
The labor force increased by 17,100 from 3,694,200 in April, as 4,900 more residents were employed and 12,200 more residents were unemployed over the month.
Traditionally a good jobs month, May's job numbers this year were more than 3,000 jobs over last May's.
Zeller said the growth in government jobs in May was promising.
Sonoma County had the fifth-lowest jobless rate in the state, tying with San Luis Obispo.
The Charleston area continued to post better-than-average job gains, expanding at a 2.5-percent pace over the year, but the Lowcountry has lost its position leading the state's growth.
"Texas employers created 266,600 jobs over the past year and the Texas economy continues to provide competitive advantages to large and small business owners across the state", said Andres Alcantar, TWC chairman.
In Douglas County, unemployment climbed three-tenths of a point in May to 3.3 percent, the same as it was in May 2016.
Oil and gas led job growth with 6,600 new jobs, followed by construction and financial activities, amid fears that labor shortages could curtail the recovery of drilling in the red-hot Permian Basin.
Job-losing industries over the year were: information, down 10 to 240; and professional and business services, down 30 to 1,650.
