Naidu will now file his nomination for the election at 11 am on Tuesday, with his candidature "welcomed by all stakeholders within then NDA", BJP national president Amit Shah said in New Delhi on Monday.
When he was 10 years old, Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu was attracted towards the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), BJP's mentor.
Naidu, former BJP president, was chosen at the party's parliamentary board meeting here attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior party leaders. Polling and counting of votes is scheduled to be held on August 5.
Gopalkrishna Gandhi, filed his nomination to become the 13th VP of India after being asked by 18 opposition parties to be their candidate.
Responding to the Shiv Sena's attack on him for petitioning the president to save Memon, Gandhi said, "Shiv Sena is doing its duty with dedication". Mr Naidu had resigned from the party.
"I want to make one thing clear that I come from a humble, agricultural background".
Naidu tweeted, "Happy that Sh Mulayam Singh ji blessed me and extended his full support".
The BJP top brass, the sources pointed out, had been consistent from the beginning that the vice-president pick should be a "consummate politician" who could handle the Opposition in the Upper House.
Speculations were rife that the BJD might support NDA's Vice Presidential candidate Venkaiah Naidu as it had earlier supported NDA's Presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind. Naidu hails from Andhra Pradesh while Rao is from Telangana. He has since been re-elected twice in 2004 and 2010 from Karnataka. He has overseen a number of parliamentary committees and is well-versed with the ways of the House. He is now in his fourth term in the Rajya Sabha, this time from Rajasthan. On several occasions in the last three years, Naidu has used his personal rapport with the opposition parties to defuse the situation in parliament.
"Venkaiah is a senior political leader across party lines and is a senior leader of the BJP which he had been associated from his youth".
The veteran leader served as the BJP national president from July 2002 to October 2004. In the party too, he has held important positions.
