A lawyer by profession, Kovind has worked extensively in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Kumar secured 3.67 lakh votes out of a total 10.69 lakh valid votes counted.
From the get-go, Kovind was expected to win more than 60 percent of the votes.
Kovind, headed Dalit Morcha from 1998 to 2002 AND also led the All-India Koli Samaj.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had nominated Kovind for the position. However, Kalam had no association with the BJP.
From 1977 to 1979, in Delhi High court Kovind was the Central Government Advocate. "Will work to protect the Constitution, uphold its values", an emotional but poised President-elect said at his temporary residence in Delhi, where supporters burst firecrackers and distributed candies.

He presented a stole and a flower and offered him candies.
The Congress party is gripped by a factional feud in Gujarat between Leader of the Opposition Shankarsinh Vaghela and state party chief Bharatsinh Solanki over who would leader the Assembly poll campaign.
Kovind, who resigned as Bihar Governor the day his name was announced for the presidential race, has been a BJP MP and is deeply associated with the party's ideological mentor RSS or Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
