"Girls Trip", which is billed as a comedy, doesn't just deliver on its laugh-out-loud scenes, but also carries resounding messages about black women engaging in self-care and sisterhood, something Hollywood has not always embraced ― but should. Invited to keynote at Essence Magazine's New Orleans conference, she sees a chance to reconnect with her three college besties - the Flossy Posse. From the moment she methodically undoes her hoop earrings, smashes a wine bottle, and launches herself at Stewart in a fancy hotel lobby, the earrings never really come back on.
Jada Pinkett Smith, "Girls' Trip" star had warned her daughter Willow Smith, 17-year-old, not to follow her footsteps i.e. marrying at a young age on Hoda Kotb's show "The Hoda Show". The real-world conflicts of these characters are never too far away, and Lee skillfully strikes just the right tone throughout to remind us life itself is never just as easy and fun as a girls trip can be. We quickly learn that Ryan's fantasy life is even a fantasy to her. Responsible mom Lisa (Pinkett Smith) hasn't been with a man since her husband left two years ago.
If only we were all as glamorous as Sasha, who consistently rocks incredible hairdos, as composed as Ryan or as riotous as Dina, who's like Id personified. Still, like many buddy films, within the group each main character does have an overall role-the motherly one, the proper one, the wild one, the leader. Perhaps not. Although a good many of Shakespeare's greatest works pushed the boundaries of proper etiquette as this film does.
"'Girls Trip' nails laugh after laugh even amidst - and oftentimes because of - dramatic issues that wouldn't be out of place in a Lifetime movie". Sit in an audience with this thing and you just might miss half the dialogue over the consistent roars from the crowd. Girls Trip hews closely to that line and is therefore, by default, better than its counterpart from his summer, Rough Night. There are absinthe-induced hallucinations, exciting glimpses of the festival scene (blink and you'll miss Ava DuVernay, Common and Mariah Carey, though not the cameos by Sean Combs and Iyanla Vanzant), a girls-against-girls dance-off/brawl and an airborne urination scene amusing enough to empty a few audience bladders in turn. At night, the Flossy Posse drops like a bomb on Bourbon Street, adding absinthe highs, dance-offs, and public urination to its legacy of debauchery. "That we're not always arguing and screaming over a man", Hall said. The value of true friendship is the most consistent message in Girls Trip.
This film feels good.
