"It always struck me as a weekend where you can take advantage of school clothing, school supplies, (or) anything you're going to need to send your child back to school", said one shopper. School supplies that are $20 or less per item are eligible for the exemption, as are clothing and footwear that are less than $100 per item.
The tax exemption also may not be used for rented or leased property or items.
Miller with the Florida federation said stores also benefit when customers purchase "secondary items" that aren't covered by the sales tax holiday "because you had the extra savings you had the opportunity to buy them now".
NRF also said families with children in K-12 schools will spend almost $30 billion of that total with the average family shelling out $687.72, an increase of 8 percent over the 2016 average.
Oklahoma's event begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday and ends midnight Sunday. Clothing and shoes under $60 each. School supplies will be a little cheaper this weekend.
Also, the Nebraska Department of Revenue has said Nebraskans still owe sales tax during tax season on the goods they purchase in Iowa but use in Nebraska.
This will be the third year that the commonwealth has combined its three sales tax holidays into one.
Senate President Stan Rosenberg said Baker's sales tax holiday bill would be sent to committee for review, but noted that the state's "fiscal situation hasn't really changed". Personal computers and accessories must retail for $750 or less.
This year's sales tax holiday was introduced by State Rep. John Patterson, D-Jefferson, and State Rep. Brigid Kelly, D-Cincinnati.
