The entrepreneur's comments came after Tesla announced its second-quarter financial results, revealing revenue of $2.8bn (£2.1bn) and a loss of $2.04 per share. Its net loss grew 15 percent to $336 million in the period. On average, 19 analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected loss of $1.80 per share for the quarter. The Company produces and distributes two fully electric vehicles, the Model S sedan and the Model X sport utility vehicle (SUV).
Tesla bears were down $3.64 billion in mark to market losses in 2016 and the first half of 2017, as the total short exposure increased 49 percent, noted Ihor Dusaniwsky, head of research at S3.
Excluding items, the company lost $1.33 per share.
"Early Model 3 launch milestones look strong, but the $2bn of 2H capex will make your eyes water", said Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas. It wants to increase that further to 10,000 vehicles per week sometime next year.
But the Model 3 isn't the only Tesla model in demand, production in other areas is also growing fast. The company ended the quarter with $3 billion in cash.
Few things would be worse for Tesla than the Model 3 getting a reputation as a reliability nightmare. The US group started taking orders at the beginning of May.
Tesla said it has completed the first installations of the Solar Roof. That base model will begin production in January.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk said Wednesday the company may push back its big demonstration of its self-driving tech. Musk rejected such suggestions, although he said a debt raising was a possibility. With the company just shipping the first 30 of its high-volume Model 3 units on July 28, CEO Elon Musk had fun rubbing in the pain by tweeting: "Stormy weather in shortsville".
"This is maybe the best I've ever felt about Tesla, to be frank", Musk added. The CEO said pulling off those plans will be "production hell" for workers at Tesla's lone auto assembly plant in Fremont, California.
Shares in Elon Musk's Tesla jumped almost eight per cent in after-hours trading despite a widening loss as the company revealed an average of more than 1,800 daily reservations for its Model 3 auto.
