With the Miami Dolphins signing 34-year-old (and briefly retired) quarterback Jay Cutler, former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick remains unemployed. Those were two of the chief reasons why they thought he was a "good fit" and why Cutler will nearly certainly be under center when the regular season gets underway.
Enter Cutler, who chose to walk away from the game for the Fox broadcast booth once he ascertained a starting position wasn't going to be there for him this season.
The one-year deal is worth $10 million, plus up to $3 million in incentives, a source told Schefter.
Now that Cutler is back in action, he was speaking at a press conference and it took him no time at all to become another meme. Perhaps he grinded over a decision to retire, even with limited interest in him on the open market, and the Dolphins had a rare, unique situation to consider when the opportunity surfaced.
'I was pretty good with where I was in my life, ' Cutler said.
Tannehill had 19 touchdowns, 12 interceptions and a career-best 93.5 passer rating in his only season under Gase.
Gase said it would take some time to get Cutler physically ready to play as he works his way back into game shape.
Reflecting on the surprise 30th birthday party that Cutler planned for her, Cavallari wrote: "This is the only somewhat decent picture I have from last night (and we're both clearly sober) but Jay really went all out for my 30th birthday".
"He remembers basically everything with the offense", Gase said.
"It'll come back pretty quickly", he said.
But Cutler's "soft" tag definitely took hold during the 2011 NFC Championship when the Bears quarterback had to leave the game in the third quarter with a knee injury and his team trailing 14-0. He said Monday he isn't anxious about the injury, telling reporters that his arm will "come back quickly", per Kelly. I mean they've been going through training camp and stuff like that, so I'm not that quite there yet.
So while Peyton Manning may have put the Gase name on the fast track in the NFL, people around the league kind of understood that in many ways Manning was his own de facto offensive coordinator by that point. I don't know what else to say, Jay Cutler is not going to make your team better.
"I feel good where he was at the last couple of years. I think our guys understand that". It was very simple, very straightforward. "And I get it".
"I know the system, you're talking about a playoff team, with a lot of really good football players with a lot of potential".
