Jordan Spieth begins his pursuit of the final leg of a career Grand Slam at the Quail Hollow Club, starting his round on the par-5 10th hole.
Alongside Spieth in the feature group were the year's two other major winners, Spain's Sergio Garcia from the Masters, who made a 10-foot birdie putt at the 10th, and American Brooks Koepka from the US Open, who lipped out from five feet for birdie and settled for par.
You can follow all 72 holes (and possibly more) of the 2017 PGA Championship on your laptop, tablet, or phone thanks to the magic of the internet.
Such praise for a rookie major venue isn't entirely unheard of-Bethpage Black was lauded at the 2002 U.S. Open before the championship had wrapped up with Tiger Woods taking the title, and quickly awarded a second U.S. Open just seven years later.
Rory McIlroy (2012 and 2014) is the only PGA Championship victor since 2008 who is not a first-time Major victor.
Garcia is hoping he can build on that and get on a roll early on at Quail Hollow. Yes, sustained success on the professional tours over years can often be the indication of a consistent and satisfying career, but we crucially judge players firstly on what they accomplished during four key weeks each season.
"It annoys and motivates me at the same time", said Day about slipping to world No.7.
"You do think whatever happens, I've already won the Masters and it's wonderful", Garcia said. I like PGA Championship setups. "It's hard when you feel like the year's kind of gone, it's hard to kind of pick yourself up", said Day. "If I'm the favourite, I'm the favourite". I'm so happy about that, that I can't add pressure to this week.
Less than three weeks after he won the Open Championship, Spieth's only real concern was the Charlotte humidity.
"Significant changes to the global golfing calendar have given us the opportunity to move the BMW PGA Championship to a more favorable date from 2019 onwards", said Keith Pelley, the CEO of the European Tour. "It makes the first six holes a lot more challenging".
"I really just haven't got the results I've been hoping for and I'd put it more down to poor driving than anything by my standards".
The 2019 PGA, already scheduled for Bethpage Black on Long Island, will be the first played in May since 1949.
The world No. 1 says he is nearly back to the level he was at before injuring his back on the eve of the US Masters.
Spieth is ready for the challenge of a course that has absorbed an inch of rain this week, giving long hitters an extra edge with balls plopping into fairways and holding on greens that might otherwise be lightning-fast. You can't fake it around here. "Because I know how good I can be, because I have got to No. 1 in the world".
"It's a little soft".
At one point along the course, a fan was overhead ribbing Phelps about his much-publicized "race" against a shark that aired during Discovery's Shark Week. That doesn't make it any easier. In the final round before the Presidents Cup selections, he shot 62 while playing with Phil Mickelson, who told US captain Fred Couples, "Dude, you've got to pick this guy".
"What Hideki did was pretty impressive", McIlroy said.
"Usually that's my strong suit and so is the iron play and it's been a bit hit and miss. His confidence is high".
