Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has named his matchday squad that will take on Brighton in the Citizens' first league game of the season at the Amex Stadium. City have the spending power and seem to be able to attract the names they want, which their rivals - even their illustrious neighbours United - look at with envy. There is no doubt that Brighton are one of the more attractive sides to watch but they'll have to certainly up their game to survive in Premier League.
It was the Seagulls' first top-flight match since 1983.
In a cosmopolitan city which welcomes anyone - think Williamsburg in Brooklyn, but an hour away from New York City and on the coast - Brighton will have the eyes of the world watching their team. They will start off against, perhaps, one of the toughest opponents in the league, and it will be interesting to see how they hold their own as Guardiola's men pay a visit.
De Bruyne's probing nearly paid off in the 27th minute when a measured ball over Brighton's defence was bundled in by Jesus, but referee Michael Olivier spotted the Brazilian's hand making the crucial final touch and the goal was ruled out.
Brighton's defensive plan had been on point, until they conceded.
Hughton hopes to bring the good times back but is also eager to write new history when asked if he's now glad to get Brighton's grand day out of the way. Referee Michael Oliver was unmoved.
Jesus should have scored a legitimate goal after 33 minutes. However, the Brazilian clearly handles the ball before he puts it into the back of the net. Bruno did enough to prevent Gabriel Jesus poking in the rebound. "I am satisfied, especially with the second half".
Next Aguero tried to bulldoze his way through three Brighton defenders and Shane Duffy barely kicked an intended back-pass. However, with only Ryan to beat, he skewed his shot well wide.
Solly March 7 - Brighton's most promising attacking force, neat and tidy with the ball and tried to set his side on the attack.
Sergio Aguero 8 - Fluffed a golden chance when he was curiously off-target but showed his killer instinct by making the most of his second. However, Jadon Sancho is pushing for a move out of Manchester City because he fears he will not be given opportunities this season. Brighton were forced back in front of their own penalty area and unable to break out, Walker nearly a full-time attacker. Brighton midfielder Dale Stephens dithered around the halfway before being dispossessed by Kevin de Bruyne. "Bernardo played his first minutes and he was immediately ready to play". And five minutes later City struck again when Dunk towered above Jesus but inadvertently headed in from Fernandinho's teasing cross. In the Championship if you make an elementary error, you do not get punished.
