Georgia's season opener against Appalachian State is already the subject of bad news.
UGA coach Kirby Smart said after the game that Eason suffered a "sprained knee." UGASports.com is reporting he "suffered a left knee and ankle sprain" and has an MRI scheduled for Sunday.
Though it hasn't been confirmed he will be out, Fromm would likely start next Saturday at Notre Dame should Eason be unavailable to play.
Fromm did exactly what was asked of him: He played within the constraints of the offense, doing so as efficiently as the coaches could have hoped - note that he finished with a quarterback rating of 168.7.
Among the returning players that were starters or regular contributors, Smart said, Carter has improved as much or more than any of them.
Fromm wasn't assured of playing time in the game or even the season before Eason's injury.
Jake Fromm went 10/15 for 143 yards and a score with no turnovers.
His third series, a floater toward Terry Godwin coaxed a pass interference call on Appalachian State that set up a 6-yard Sony Michel touchdown on a direct snap.
The field goal was blocked by Corey Lynch and the return ran the remaining seconds off the clock, leaving MI fans dumbfounded. They took Tennessee into overtime past year before losing, and they lost not because Tennessee was so great, but because the Vols recovered their own fumble in the end zone after Appalachian State made a solid defensive play to cause the fumble.
Appalachian State, which got a $1.25 million guarantee for the game, last was shutout 24-0 to LSU in 2005.
But Saturday's game will center around Georgia's quarterbacks. He led the league with 1,402 yards rushing. The unit went three-and-out on its first two possessions and was about to face another third down if not for the late hit from Appalachian State outside linebacker Devan Stringer.
Eason, a sophomore who played in every game last season and started since week two, came up limping.
Eason limped back onto the field and then collapsed behind the line. He was 1 of 3 for 4 yards.
Georgia made a decision to hand the ball to Michel on a simple draw play on third-and-2, and for the first time that day, he found some running room. He ran for 10 touchdowns. Georgia allowed just 284 total yards on the evening, and just 12 first downs. In 2014, Georgia had 28 sacks and 71 TFLs. Another drive ended at the Georgia 25 as the clock ended on the first half. It was this day in 2007 that No. 5 MI suffered a loss at home against Division I-AA (now commonly known as FCS) opponent Appalachian State.
RUSHING-Appalachian St., Lamb 10-66, J.Moore 13-38, Upshaw 7-17, Z.Thomas 1-13, Mal.Williams 1-2. In the teams' only previous meeting, Georgia won 45-6 in 2013. Lamb, the son of Mercer coach Bobby Lamb, completed 18 of 27 passes for 128 yards and ran for 66 yards and a touchdown.
Smart also noted Ramsey is the No. 2 quarterback with Eason out, leaving Fromm as the other option as the only other scholarship quarterback on the roster.
