News and notes from around the world of ACC Football. Led by reigning Heisman Trophy victor Lamar Jackson, the Cardinals put up 701 yards of total offense. This week presents an even greater challenge for third-ranked Clemson, as they will travel to No. 14 Louisville to take on the Cardinals and reigning Heisman victor Lamar Jackson.
Led by Jackson, who has 255 yards rushing and 771 passing in the first two games, the Cardinals' offense is ranked fifth in the country. Watson is now gone, as are many other key players from last season. Tonight's game may actually come down to which team has the ball last.
Can Jackson get it done against the Tigers? Lamar Jackson is completing 64.7 percent of his passes for 771 yards, five touchdowns and zero interceptions. If the Cardinals are going to make a dent in the series, one of the nation's top offenses will have a say in the outcome. "Previous year they did a very good job of getting others involved".
The Vols broke an 11-game losing streak to the Gators in 2016.
They understand what the team lost on offense - two-time 1,000-yard rusher Wayne Gallman, all-time school receptions leader Artavis Scott, tight end Jordan Leggett and emotional leader in center Jay Guillermo are also national champions not around this fall - and, while they have confidence in the newcomers, it could take some time before they're clicking the way last year's group did. A loss for Florida would mean the Gators are 0-2. Check out the top performers in the early season Heisman watch.
"Of course, we're going to have to bring it", Bryant said of Saturday night's matchup at the Cardinals.
The combined score in those games was 920-234, an average score of 46-12. No. 7 MI and No. 8 Ohio State could get tested by Air Force and Army, respectively, at least for a half.
MEMPHIS (+3) over Ucla: Cue Admiral Ackbar. This is one of those rare occasions where crowd and stage could make a difference in Louisville's favor, at least as regards the Clemson signal-caller. Also, while young and not yet proven, Kelly Bryant looks promising at quarterback. This is his time to shine. Jackson did not appear in the top 25 on Mel Kiper's preseason Big Board, finally making his debut as the 13th-ranked National Football League prospect in the country entering this week. The Commodores should like their chances, too. The Tigers finished with just two touchdowns and 281 yards of offense, far from the almost 40 points and more than 500 yards it averaged in winning the national title. After managing just 138 yards with no touchdowns and four sacks the first two quarters, Jackson erupted for 319 yards with three touchdowns with just one sack. It was an outstanding defensive performance from the Tigers despite playing without safety Van Smith and cornerback Marcus Edmund, the latter of whom should be back for this game. U.Va. coach Bronco Mendenhall believes his team took a step forward last week. This will be a fun, defensive, low-scoring game. Both team's have hit the over once, and the under once as well. The quarterback is back and maybe even better this time around. The team has a 2-1 record in such games. "Our coaches have a good game plan, we just have keep doing a better job of executing".
Ohio State and MI should be fine, but they've been down this road before.
