Obama had Trump's phones at Trump Tower tapped. Turned down by court earlier.
CNN said the secret court that oversees warrant requests under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act issued issued warrants to wiretap Manafort starting in 2016 before the election, according to RFE/RL.
But at this point, the news becomes less rosy for Trump supporters. But the claim of vindication ignores critical facts in CNN's story.
Roger Stone, a former business partner of Manafort's and informal adviser of Trump's, said the new revelations support Trump's claim. And let's back up and recall where we have been.
Whether Manafort is charged with any crime - or if it implicates the larger Trump campaign in wrongdoing - remains to be seen. He served as Trump's campaign manager for just three months, starting in May 2016.
Manafort was initially being surveilled not because of his connection to Trump but because of an investigation opened in 2014 into his work as a political consultant in Ukraine.
In order for the Federal Bureau of Investigation to receive the legal authority to engage in that surveillance, it needed to provide a FISA-empowered court with information that the targeted individuals could be acting as foreign agents. It also did not say how soon after Manafort became Trump's campaign chairman that the Federal Bureau of Investigation was able to obtain the second warrant. Donald Trump Jr. had been promised damaging information about Hillary Clinton before the meeting.
CNN's sources suggested that some of the evidence "sparked concerns among investigators that Manafort had encouraged the Russians to help with the campaign", but that the evidence of Russian collusion remained inconclusive. But the FBI obtained a new FISA warrant that extended at least through early 2017 as part of its investigation into possible contacts between Trump officials and Russian operatives. The NYT reports that the raid was conducted despite Manafort already being involved in the investigation's interview process.
Manafort had conversations with Trump, but it is unclear whether the wiretap picked up Trump, CNN reported.
The FBI, as well as several congressional committees, are investigating whether Russian Federation attempted to interfere in the United States election in order to help Donald Trump.
