The Yankees dropped behind the Indians 2-0 in the American League Division Series last night, and the brunt of the 13-inning, 9-8 loss is falling on manager Joe Girardi's shoulders - for good reason.
The news on Saturday regarding Edwin Encarnación's ankle wasn't as gruesome as the video appeared to be from Friday night. Gary Sanchez, Aaron Hicks and Greg Bird all homered, while the old guard, CC Sabathia, was turning in an Andy Pettitte-like Game 2 performance. Their goal right now is to win one game, Game 3.
Yan Gomes was the player mobbed by his teammates between first and second base, and deservedly so.
"So we're going to have to, one, you gauge how a guy is throwing". "No words, honestly. I'm speechless".
It's the postseason debut for Carrasco, who is coming off his first 200-inning season and ranks among the AL's top five in WHIP (1.10), strikeouts (230) and FanGraphs WAR (5.5) this season. "We'll let them do their stuff tomorrow and then we'll kind of see where he's at", the skipper added. Josh Tomlin picked up the win with two innings of scoreless relief.
Encarnacion hit 30 home runs and had 107 RBIs in his first season with Cleveland this year.
The Yankees lost consecutive games for the first time since they were swept at home in a three-game series by the Indians from August 28-30.
"Three hits is not going to do it", third baseman Todd Frazier.
Now, who starts Game 4 if the Yankees use Severino in relief in Game 3? In 19 2/3 innings against NY, he has allowed two runs and 13 hits with 19 strikeouts.
Girardi really screwed up. He said the team later saw a slow-motion replay suggesting he should've contested the call, but it was too late.
Girardi has been heavily criticized for his mistake ever since, and he didn't even admit that he goofed until his interview during Saturday's off day. It's a hard day for me. "He stood there. But it's just stuff that happens in the game". This could have allowed the Yankees to keep its lead intact instead of the Indians scoring four runs on Lindor's grand slam. Like I said, he'd be on normal rest, so that's not a problem. "Then after a couple of steps, I was like, 'No, don't go foul, please". That's just who I am. "Just go over there and play good baseball".
With the Yankees leading 8-3, the initial ruling was that Indians outfielder Lonnie Chisenhall was hit by a pitch with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Five innings later, the Indians finally broke the tie. He lost to them, 8-1, in Cleveland on August 6. Trevor Bauer did his job in the series opener October 5, and though Corey Kluber got shelled in Game 2, the bullpen and bats still saved the day. "He had a pretty good resume behind him". The DH's right ankle rolled awkwardly as he attempted to get back and he crumpled to the ground. Unable to stand he waited for medical assistance before being helped off the field.
Girardi said that nothing indicated that the call of a hit-by-pitch was not the correct call.
Michael Brantley is expected to be the designated hitter in Encarnacion's place Sunday.
