This weekend saw a not entirely unexpected mad dash of chaotic fast food stockchecking, as fans of Rick and Morty across the United States did everything in their power to get hold of the elusive Szechuan McNugget dipping sauce. And on Monday, they realized they needed to do more: The brand has promised to bring back Szechuan Sauce in greater quantities, and to more locations, later this winter.
Spurred by a recent mention of the dipping sauce on the adult animated "Rick & Morty" show, and subsequent fan requests, McDonald's said it would bring the sauce back on Saturday, for one day only.
On Saturday, October 7th, several McDonald's locations across the USA gave away Szechuan Sauce, in response to an episode and outcry from fans of the Adult Swim cartoon. It was something of an intriguing, corporate-friendly throwaway reference in a single episode, and plenty of people figured it'd be really cool (as well as a PR win) if McDonald's just brought it back.
On Saturday afternoon, McDonald's apologized for the problem.
People lined up outside MacDonald's outlets with picket signs chanting slogans like "We want sauce".
McDonald's apparently can't get enough of its Szechuan sauce either. And it won't be a one-day event, either, so you should have a better chance of just walking into your local restaurant and getting the sauce you so desire.
In the first episode of season three Rick goes on a rant, telling Morty: "I'm driven by finding that McNugget sauce".
You spoke. We've listened.
"We want to make this right", the company added.
"In the last 24 hours, we've worked to opened every portal necessary", McDonald's writes in the statement.
